The house and surrounding area are steeped in World War I history, as it was once a World War I military hospital for soldiers, and Montreathmont Forest was the location of the Montreathmont Camp Radio Station in World War II and as Airship Station in WWI. The listening radio station began as a secret listening post and codebreaking centre, which operated as an outstation of Bletchley Park during World War II and continued to monitor communications during the Cold War. Remains of the site can still be seen today.
The forest is also home to a host of wildlife, as is nearby Balgavies Loch which is a birdwatcher’s paradise, where waders, ducks, geese and osprey are often sighted.
